The Centurion is a magazine that primarily publishes articles focused on power (typically meaning politics) and culture, with word counts ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 if published digitally and 2,500 to 5,000 when featured in our print edition. As a magazine focused on politics, we take a progressive approach best characterized as socially democratic, which is apparent in the pieces we produce. We do not typically publish fiction or poetry digitally, and that which we do is most often satirical in nature.
Articles that typically work best in our publication are:
Analysis and critiques of current political and cultural discourse.
Endorsements of progressive candidates in local and state elections.
Commentary on lesser-known conditions causing suffering to human (or animal) life.
Analysis of bad writers, thinkers, or commentators—especially those whose beliefs are common in mainstream discussion.
Takedowns of current or potential political leaders on both sides of the aisle.
Reviews of books, although they are best when not written about the book, per se, but the topic the book is dedicated to—you should be trying to entice people with no intention of reading the book you are covering.
On the other hand, some big no-noes:
Nihilist, doomerist, or overall negative language with no viable solutions or paths forward.
Words no one has ever heard of, like grandiloquence or sesquipedalianism, both of which mean “words no one has ever heard of.”
Unsourced claims—The Centurion will typically hyperlink a source to go along with every factual claim.
Name-dropping philosophers or theorists.
The idea that “the ends justify the means.”
The editorial “we”—it overgeneralizes. Do not, however, be afraid to use the first person.
The best way to be accepted is to be original. If your piece is interesting and has a strong voice, it’s likely to be accepted. Please, do not use AI. Not only will we be able to tell as ChatGPT's writing is just plain boring, but why submit anything at all if you had no hand in its creation?
On the topic of original voices, your final draft may sound completely different after the revision process, as ours is very hands-on unless you have worked with us in the past. However, this does not necessarily say anything about you as a writer—we just have a rather distinctive style that helps define us as a publication.
Finally, please ensure every positive claim is followed up with at least one justification, if not several. For example, you certainly could posit that Elon Musk is a killer, but you are unlikely to convince the masses unless you cite the landmark Lancet study on the matter.
We (yes, the editorial we) appreciate you taking the time to read through our guide on getting a placement in The Centurion and hope to hear from you soon!
